WEEK #45 NOVEMBER 4th-10th

Dear Customers,

“November” is generally not one of those words you find starting the following sentence, “______________ is my favorite month of the year.  I’ve heard April, May, June, July, August, September and even December used in that slot, but never November.

Our eleventh month is gray, cold, windy and often snowy even though the ground is still too warm for much, if any, accumulation.  Other than Thanksgiving and the days leading up to it, I have one strong memory of Thanksgiving from my youth.  My big brother, Sam, was thirteen years older than I – and as such – had very little (none whatsoever) patience where I was concerned.

One cold November day, Sam took me with him to go “shoot the .22” up on Prospect Hill.  I can only surmise it was at my mother’s insistence because I was rarely included in Sam’s plans.  Even today, I could still take you to the exact spot, some 60 years later, describe the cold, windy gray skies and the thrill of being allowed to shoot an actual rifle!  Though I’ve eaten some 70 Thanksgiving dinners, that afternoon is my most vivid November memory!

Probably my favorite room in the house when November rolls around is the kitchen – and not just because that’s where we keep the food!  It’s warmer, homier and elicits comfortable feelings of baking, soup making and family get-togethers.  This week’s MEAT BONANZA plays right into that comfortable feeling.

It’s reassuring to know that there are chicken breasts or roasts or even packages of sausage in the freezer when cold weather makes its appearance.  Maybe not in November, but soon, you’ll be glad you don’t have to venture out to the store to put something warm and wholesome on the table for the family.  And just like Aesop’s ant, when all the grasshopper wanted to do was fiddle . . . you’ll have plenty set aside for the winter – come what may!
