WEEK #50 DECEMBER 9th

Dear Customers,

This was the time of year I absolutely loved as a kid.  The expectations were fast reaching fever pitch.   So much so that I would turn on the lights of the Christmas tree and crawl underneath its branches to be as close as possible to the multi-colored lights, the piney aroma and the anticipation of Christmas morning!  Santa Claus and Forgetful the Elf were on WBEN TV every weeknight serving merely to heighten my excitement!

Strings of Christmas lights were stretched across Main Street from Hulls Hotel to up past the Court House and a few strands even adorned the big curve at the Eastern end of Main Street next to Norman’s Gulf Station. There were at least two, possibly three gigantic pine trees along Main Street that also sported colored lights from top to bottom.  All in all, it was like a scene out of The Christmas Story, designed to torment a young boy’s dreams.

Besides decorations and gifts, the other main component of Christmas is of course the food!  Holiday cooking follows family traditions.  In our household there were certain foods that my mother only made for Christmas; crespete (tuna or anchovie stuffed deep-fried dough), meatballs, and Strufoli (little balls of dough covered in honey and pine nuts then formed around a bundt pan), to name just three.  My siblings and I would literally fight over her meatballs because we knew we wouldn’t get them again till the very earliest, Easter!

Everyone reading this has similar family favorites that they look forward to this entire year.  Now’s the time to pick up your supplies, baking and/or cooking items that are necessary to carry on the family traditions.  Our deli, bakery and meat departments are standing by for your special requests!

Keep in mind that next week is the first of two identical weekly ads leading up to Christmas so that you can avail yourself of all the special pricing from December 16th through December 29th!
