WEEK #1 DEC 30th – JAN 5th

Dear Customers,

Christmas and New Year’s Day are always exactly a week apart.  Having New Year’s Eve falling on a Tuesday doesn’t really lend itself well to celebrations or parties.  Be that as it may, that’s where the first of the new year falls in 2025, so even if you can’t over-indulge at a mid-week bash, you can at least enjoy a delicious meal of pork & sauerkraut!

Why did these two foods get paired together to begin with?  Immigrants from Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland had been eating these dishes for centuries and when they came to this country in the 17th and 18th centuries, they brought their cuisine along with them!  Some people say eating this particular combination on New Year’s will bring good luck for the upcoming year.  Actually, there’s probably

no deeper meaning other than the fact that “rich, fatty and salty” pork is the perfect compliment for “tart and lean sauerkraut”.

Those who subscribe to the “good luck” theory believe that pork is the natural choice because pigs root moving forward and it’s always good to look forward into the new year.  Also, pork is one of the fattier meats and fat signifies prosperity!  Sauerkraut comes from cabbage which is basically round.  The round shape was also considered a sign of good luck.  Cabbage is often green which is a color associated with financial success.  Fermented foods are a good source of vitamin C, so it makes sense to eat some in the dead of winter!

Our meat department will have a huge selection of pork this week, but due to the recently passed Christmas holiday deadlines, it didn’t make it into our printed ad, but you be sure to check our Facebook page where we will be offering all our pork products that didn’t make the print deadline.

Two schedule items, just FYI.  Costa’s Supermarket will be open from 8am – 6pm on NEW YEAR’S DAY.  On January 2nd, Thursday we will be transitioning to our Winter hours of 7am – 8pm!
