WEEK #4, JAN 20th

Dear Customers,

January is a cold, gray month.  So are the next two!  But we have to survive January, February and March before we get into spring weather, the sound of lawn mowers and the hopeful sight of crocuses poking out of the still moist but gradually warming earth.

Back in December, from my perch up in the office, I overheard two elderly gentlemen discussing the seasons.  We were in the period pre-Christmas where the temperatures hovered well below freezing, even hitting zero a couple of times.  The first man was bemoaning the cold temperatures, but the second man (obviously a “glass half-full” kind of guy) was instead expounding upon how much he loved the change in seasons.

I’d have to agree with the “seasonal weather” opinion.  One of my former employees entered the Air Force and was ultimately stationed in San Diego.  When I asked him how he enjoyed the continuous nice weather, he remarked, “it sucks”!  “Every morning you get up, its 75° and sunny – even on Christmas!”

Would you really appreciate warm, sunny skies and balmy breezes as much if you didn’t contrast and compare them to snow, sleet and wind chills below zero?  Or that nip in the air at an October football game, the sweltering heat of an August afternoon or the absolutely perfect weather during a Memorial Day parade?

Be it safe to say that the guy who invented Crock Pots was thinking about a nice warm comfort meal for supper when his time was otherwise promised – to work or other time-consuming endeavors.   Grab a nice chuck roast from our meat case, add in some fresh potatoes, carrots, celery, onions and even a rutabaga (my wife insists) from our Produce line-up, slap on the glass lid and forget about it until suppertime.

You won’t mind the weather nearly as much when you lift that lid and smell the delicious goodness you wouldn’t enjoy nearly as much if it were summer!
